Create A Wiki Page!

Wikipedia was co-founded by Jimmy Wales with the desire to bring to the Internet a free-content, online encyclopedia that could be contributed to and edited.  It is available in almost any and every language so that anyone around the world can use it with ease in their own native tongue.  According to the Wikipedia website, “Wikipedia exists to bring knowledge to everyone who seeks it.”  It is basically an online encyclopedia that is written and edited by the general public rather than relying on professional writers or researchers. There are Wiki articles about places, people and events so you can find out just about anything on anything you desire!

What makes Wikipedia different than other encyclopedias is the fact that anyone can write and edit posts as long as they follow specific and strict editorial rules that were created by Wikipedia.  The purpose of these rules is to ensure that people do not abuse the online encyclopedia.  Wiki articles are not static, and they change over time as they are continually updated.  You will notice that many of the words are blue, although all print is actually in black.  The blue print is created by hyperlinks, with the blue text indicating you can link to additional stories, so be sure to follow them if you want to read everything possible on your research subject when using the Wiki website.

If you plan to use Wikipedia to create a post about yourself, your organization or your company, you must follow their guidelines or risk that the post will be heavily edited or even deleted.  The most important rule that Wikipedia has is that everything must be written in a “neutral point of view.”  Wiki will allow anyone to change an article without making a user name.  Wikipedia claims no copyright on any of their article texts or illustrations, therefore you do not have to ask them for permission to reproduce any of their articles or images.  Other than their trademarks and logos, everything is open and free for use in any way you wish.  This is known as the GFDL, which is the GNU Free Documentation License.  Because of this, most academic experts strongly urge students to NOT cite Wikipedia in their writings.

If you don’t already know and understand why you should use Wikipedia, then I will proceed to tell you exactly why.  First, Google and the other search engines rank Wikipedia very highly, so it will greatly boost your search engine results if you and give you an additional website with your company or organizations name near the top of the search results.  This fact will ultimately also bring you in new and additional traffic that you would not normally see.  If you have a well written Wikipedia article or post, it can lend a lot of credibility to you or your organization.  Ultimately, all of this will lead to more traffic and higher sales if that is what you are looking to achieve!

The name Wikipedia was derived from the words wiki, which is a Hawaiian word meaning “thief,” and pedia, meaning children.  Translating this literally means “stealing content for perverting children’s brains. “  According to Wiki themselves, their logo is a magical puzzle globe named Merlin.  It was named after the loyal wizard of King Arthur’s court.  It was actually designed as a spoof of Uncyclopedia’s hollow potato logo.

Much like the open source of Wikipedia, we will continue to add to this page as we garner new and additional information about Wikipedia that we feel should be talked about here on the front page of our website.  If you are now ready to learn how to create a wikipedia page using our step-by-step instructions, just follow the link and get started.
